You won't have to worry about tweaking the game just because some group became a superpower. Questions of defence, border holes, when it's okay to attack, timezone fairness etc. That way a small player base (let's say 1,000 online at peak) can be dwarfed by the AI fleets but still have a meaningful impact. Or players can do hostile or friendly actions to change how AI feel about each other so that it/they direct hostility where players want to see that happen. The players can ally themselves with the AI and help AI push their territory. I think it's better to calibrate the game so that the AI Factions are all constantly trying to expand territory and test their own borders. I'm not saying get rid of player stations or anything, but territorial ambitions should be re-directed. Players will be cursing Russians because of the timezone. Players joining groups is natural - it will happen whether or not its supported in-game - but if you go down the route of players holding and expanding their own territory in any sanctioned fashion, you will run into the endless maze of balancing and tweaking that EVE Online has to commit to. It also makes ship geometry and armour placement less crucial - not good when building my ship is a core feature of the game. I know they're a staple of space games, but they get in the way of players having the satisfaction of blowing off chunks of an enemy ship, targeting generators etc. DIY Construction and DIY Destruction are the soul of the game. I really hope that gets the most of your attention. Ships and structures can be self-built, at all times, in all fashions, and they can be taken apart through combat in a deliberate way that other games just can't. What you can offer that no one else can is what you have built into your game from day one. Their fleets are going to be cooler and better managed, so aside from making sure what you offer works as intended, don't drain yourselves there too much either, please. In terms of being in the cockpit, and playing like a pilot, there are other games that'll out-do you on that as well, no doubt about it. So please be careful not to exhaust your energy on things like turret variety, galaxy size, and market mechanics. In terms of stats and detail it's never going to exceed EVE.
